Design Idea: Turn Sun Hats Into Wall Decor

Decorate your wall and add a breeziness to your space with this simple idea

I am a huge fan of designs that marry form and function, and this is one of them. Instead of storing straw hats and bags in a closet, turn them into wall decor by hanging them on pegs or a rack. Not only does it look chic in an easy, breezy way, but it will make it easy to remember your hat going out the door.

How To Get the Look

What I love about this idea is that it is so easy to implement. You probably already have the sun hats, straw bags, and other attractive straw accessories lying around or shoved in closets. So, then all you need are the hooks. There are a couple options to turn summer accessories into wall decor, outlined below. Then scroll down for inspiration where and how to hang them.

Option 1: Install a peg rail with multiple pegs and layer hats and other accessories on the hooks.

Option 2: Install individual wood pegs or metal hooks spaced apart in a row or in an artistic pattern.

Chic Homes That Use Hats as Wall Decor

Here are some of my favorite inspirations for how to use straw accessories as wall decor. In each example the inhabitant has put their own unique spin on the design idea, depending on their space, setting, and style. Several of them are located in entry hallways, for easy access next to the door, but that’s not the only option. When you think of hats as wall decor, you can put them anywhere you’d put art or other wall hangings, like in living rooms, bedrooms, or hallways.

Sun hats (and a pair of espadrilles!) are used as wall decor to brilliant effect in this living space in the Toulouse home of former Vogue editor Lucinda Chambers (via House & Garden UK). Hanging them individually, in a slightly random placement fits the boho stylings and blends beautifully with the monochromatic color palette.

English designer Sophie Rowell of Cote de Folk turns her sun hats into wall decor by hanging them on a wooden rack. Positioned above a bench in an entry hallway, the hats are easy to grab and head out the door. The addition of a straw fish bag is a whimsical touch.

This entry hallway exudes summer vibes from the pale blue walls to the rattan accents, but none more so than the straw hats used as well decor. Designer Lilse Mckenna hangs the hats on individual hooks forming a V shape beside a round mirror.

But look up and you’ll see more straw hats used as wall decor, cleverly hung on antlers. Perhaps not as practical for every day use, but certainly creative!

And finally, a search around Pinterest yielded this uncredited image of a beachy looking space with a stained wooden peg rack above a bench. This one stores a hat as well as many, many straw bags.
