How it got on our radar
We spotted this work of art at a little shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. But we had to find out more about the creator and ultimately buy more, so we hunted it down online. We not only discovered a whole range of colors, but also the really moving story behind its design. The name ‘Hannah’ which translates to many languages, such as ‘one’ in Korean and ‘heavenly grace’ in Hebrew, inspired the design of the female form to honor that beauty and humanity.
What makes it special
Far more than a functional candle, like a Greek sculpture, the Hannah candle is meant to be admired and provoke thought. Made of a 100% organic mixture of bee & soy wax, of course it can be burned (and burns for up to 8 hrs), but might we suggest finding a prominent spot on a shelf and treating it like a sculpture. For $80, it’s a steal for a museum quality rendering of the female form.
Who’s behind it
Bonam Kim is a Korean sculptor based in Brooklyn, NY. She holds BFA and MFA degrees from Kong-ik University in Seoul, South Korea and a second MFA in sculpture from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Her background is deeply involved in her work, from choosing a Korean name for the brand to honoring craftsmanship in her process, which includes making her work by hand.
