For National Place Card Day™, The Punctilious Mr. P's Place Card Co. asked people to create a memorable table setting finished off with, of course a place card. The brand created the holiday to celebrate the first day of spring and the start of a new season of gatherings. I gladly accepted the invitation.
No tablescape is truly complete without place cards — they’re the finishing touch that can bring the whole table together and set the stage for a joyful gathering. Place cards offer a chance to have fun and bring some personality to the table whether it’s a theme or just something beautiful you love looking at. At the same time, greeting guests with their own name instantly makes them feel welcome.
For the occasion I choose Mr P’s butterfly place cards. I could have placed them directly on the plate, and it would have looked wonderful. But I wanted to challenge myself to find a more unique way to display the place cards, one that complimented the overall spring-themed tablescape. Then inspiration struck…
I remembered I once created a place card holder out of a terracotta pot for a birthday luncheon I threw for my mom. I realized if I attached the place card to a stick and stuck it in the pot, it would create the effect the butterflies were flying. As the final touch, I placed it on a plate decorated with a peony.
Regardless of what place card you use, this place card holder will add some charm to any table setting.
How To Make Place Holder
What you’ll need:
Mini terracotta pots measuring around 1.6” in diameter (I ordered these pots from Amazon)
Sheet moss (see above)
4” twigs or wooden skewers
White card stock paper or a store bought place card like the butterflies from The Punctilious Mr. P's Place Card Co
Calligraphy pen, or any felt tip pen in the color of your choice
Tape

How to create:
Cover the hole inside the pot with a piece of paper (so nothing falls out onto your table). Stuff a clump of moss into each pot.
Using a ruler (or book) and pencil, trace outlines on card stock for the name card, measuring 1” wide x 2-3” long. Write names on the name cards with gold or silver pen.
Write names on the back of place cards (if you don’t have you can cut out rectangular pieces of paper). Tape place cards to sticks. Place the skewers in the pots with moss.
